The question “How can I be saved?” is the most important question any person can ask. It deals with our eternal destiny—where we will spend forever after this life is over. The good news is that the Bible gives a clear and simple answer.

When the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” they replied,
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
—Acts 16:30–31

Below is what the Bible teaches about salvation and how you can receive it today.

Why Do I Need to Be Saved?

The Bible teaches that every person is a sinner:

  • “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” —Romans 3:23
  • We are born with a sinful nature (Psalm 51:5)
  • We choose to sin in our thoughts, words, and actions (Ecclesiastes 7:20; 1 John 1:8)

Sin is not just a mistake—it is rebellion against a holy God.
Because of sin:

  • We are separated from God
  • We are spiritually dead
  • We are headed toward eternal judgment

This is why we need salvation.

What Do I Need to Be Saved From?

The Bible says the consequence of sin is death:

  • “For the wages of sin is death.” —Romans 6:23

This includes physical death, but it also means eternal separation from God.
Because our sin is against an eternal God, the penalty is eternal as well (Psalm 51:4).

Scripture describes this judgment as:

  • Eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46)
  • The lake of fire (Revelation 20:15)

This is what Jesus came to save us from.

How Did God Provide Salvation?

We cannot save ourselves. No amount of good works, religion, or effort can erase our sin.
So God did what we could never do.

  • God became a man—Jesus Christ
  • Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life
  • He willingly died on the cross as our substitute (John 10:15)

Because Jesus is fully human, He could die.
Because He is fully God, His sacrifice has infinite and eternal value.

His death paid the full penalty for our sin:

  • “He is the propitiation for our sins.” —1 John 2:2

His resurrection proved that His sacrifice was complete and accepted by God.

What Must I Do to Be Saved?

The Bible’s answer is simple and clear:

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

—Acts 16:31

Salvation is not earned—it is a gift:

  • “For by grace you have been saved through faith… not of works.” —Ephesians 2:8–9
  • “Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” —John 3:16

To be saved, you must:

  • Admit you are a sinner
  • Believe that Jesus died and rose again for you
  • Trust in Jesus alone to forgive your sins and give you eternal life

Jesus Himself said:

  • “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” —John 14:6

There is no other way. Jesus is the only Savior.
